A Proactive Approach to Partner Retirement

The Pinnacle Program helps AmLaw firms support their partners through retirement in a way that protects client relationships, preserves institutional knowledge, and strengthens the firm's culture around succession.

A two-phase program — group retreat plus individual coaching — delivered for cohorts of partners within three years of retirement.

As Seen In

Retirement is a Firm Issue, Not Just a Personal One

How senior partners leave affects everything that comes after them — client retention, associate mentorship, successor credibility, and the reputation of the partnership itself.

Left to individual improvisation, retirement becomes a series of fragmented decisions made under pressure. Pinnacle gives firms a structured, proven process that sets partners up to leave on their terms — and sets the firm up to thrive after they do.

Why Pinnacle?

Give partners the structure and support to transition well — and protect what the firm has built alongside them.

80

Protect Client Relationships

A clear transition plan preserves client continuity and safeguards the firm's most valuable relationships.

105

Reduce Partner Uncertainty

A proven framework replaces improvised, last-minute decisions with a deliberate plan the partner owns.

81

Build Identity Continuity

Partners bridge their professional identity into what comes next, rather than experiencing retirement as a loss

78

Preserve Firm Reputation

Partners leave in integrity, with their legacy and the firm's standing intact.

77

Strengthen Succession

Successors step in with confidence; the transition reinforces rather than disrupts the next generation of leadership.

76

Cohort Peer Learning

A curated cohort of senior partners gains perspective and accountability from peers facing the same transition.

Designed by Lawyers, for Lawyers

Pinnacle was built from inside the profession. Co-founders Elizabeth Zelinka Parsons (former Milbank attorney, Board Certified Coach, and author of Encore: A High Achiever's Guide to Thriving in Retirement) and David Parsons (economist, Board Certified Coach) have worked with hundreds of AmLaw partners on the transition out of practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Pinnacle delivered — on-site or off-site?

Phase 1 is a residential weekend retreat at a luxury resort, scheduled at a location selected with the firm. Phase 2 is delivered virtually at times convenient for each partner. We've found this hybrid approach gives cohorts both the power of shared experience and the depth of individualized planning.

Which partners is Pinnacle designed for?

Partners within approximately three years of retirement. The ideal engagement window is 18 to 9 months before a target departure date, providing enough runway to plan the transition thoughtfully while acting on what the program surfaces.

Your spouse can also stay at the resort without attending sessions. Participation in group meals is encouraged for a nominal fee.

How is the cohort structured?

Firms typically convene a cohort of senior partners preparing for retirement around the same period. Cohorts work best at 10–20 participants, though we tailor the structure to the firm's partnership and timing.

What if a partner isn't sure about their retirement timeline?

Uncertainty about timing is common and expected. The program helps each partner determine the optimal timeline for their practice and personal circumstances. Counterintuitively, setting a tentative target date — even one that later shifts — accelerates clarity. Many participants find the planning process itself reveals exactly when and how to make the transition.

What if a partner has no vision for what comes next?

Most participants arrive without a clear picture of their Next Act. The program's structured frameworks — Identity Bridging, Life Restructuring, the Professional Fulfillment Profile — are designed precisely to surface possibilities partners hadn't considered. Not knowing is the starting point, not a disqualifier.

What is the firm's role in the engagement?

Firms typically sponsor participation as part of their partner development or succession planning investment. Beyond funding, the most successful engagements involve firm leadership in framing the opportunity, supporting partners' participation, and integrating insights into succession conversations where appropriate. We work closely with firm leaders on messaging and rollout.

What is covered by the fee?

The fee includes all Phase 1 facilitation (retreat, welcome reception, meals during sessions), all Phase 2 individual coaching hours, assessments and pre-work, a comprehensive written report, four group follow-up sessions, and three hours of additional executive coaching per participant. Not included: participant travel and lodging.

What preparation is required?

Each participant completes pre-work — questionnaires, a personality assessment, and reflection exercises — taking approximately three hours. The pre-work is designed to be manageable for busy practicing partners and meaningfully accelerates the retreat work.

Is confidentiality protected within the cohort?

Yes. Participants control what they share. The work is conducted in a confidential environment, and there is no requirement to disclose sensitive personal or professional information to the group. Individual Phase 2 sessions are fully private.

May spouses or partners attend?

Planning together strengthens outcomes. Spouses and partners are welcome to join relevant portions of the retreat. We'll discuss how spousal involvement is best structured as part of the engagement planning.

Elizabeth and David provided invaluable advice to me (and my spouse) as we prepare to enter the next leg of our journey. Our meetings with Elizabeth and David were enjoyable in a beautiful, relaxed setting. But most importantly they provided a unique perspective and manner of thinking about retirement. Their advice ranged from the introspective (very methodically directing discussions about my plans and objectives for retirement) to the practical (e.g., changing over email contacts well in advance).

Elizabeth and David are superb in helping you identify those things that you truly value and love and the range of post-retirement opportunities that could be genuinely fulfilling--and how to utilize your skills and relationships to pursue those opportunities. I left the meetings with a much higher comfort level about how to approach retirement and the opportunities ahead.

I met with Elizabeth and David in late 2019. I had a projected Latham retirement date of June 30, 2021 and a very clear sense that I wanted to continue working in an in-house job after that. My session with David and Elizabeth in Tucson clarified and focused in on the job attributes that I should be seeking, and my own qualities that I should be selling, in my search. They then worked with me on a very specific networking plan intended to provide me with an ever expanding set of connections. They continued to advise me every step of the way, including on positioning myself for every particular opportunity...I had never engaged in such an open-ended, broad-based process, and they were an essential part of it...They were absolutely invaluable throughout, and both have enormous perspective and wisdom. If you are facing a major transition, you should most definitely have Elizabeth and David on your team!"

The retirement planning program developed by David and Elizabeth should be a benefit afforded to everyone as they contemplate that phase of their life. David and Elizabeth are extremely skilled at helping people, individually and then as a couple, explore, develop and refine existing or new ideas for a fulfilling retirement. Then they draw on their complementary skillsets and vast experience in this field to help craft those ideas into a meaningful transition plan. They also offer continued support throughout the implementation phase of that plan, and adapt that support given one’s evolving needs, desires and opportunities. Going through their program will help anyone, regardless of their degree of confidence and self-assuredness, to better know themselves.

I found the program to be an excellent tool for better planning my life post retirement. The personalized, methodical approach used by Elizabeth and David made for both a smart and fun set of conversations, and left me with a solid foundation of considerations to guide me in the future. Importantly, Elizabeth and David are quite knowledgeable about issues applicable to and resources available for retiring professionals in a broad variety of circumstances. Moreover, they invested themselves in getting to know me and constructing a unique program for me, and I found them to be warm and thoughtful."

I have very much enjoyed working with David and Elizabeth on my planning for retirement. I reached out to meet with them even though I am several years from retirement so that I could put some structure around planning for what I hope will be a fulfilling retirement journey after Latham. Our sessions gave me tremendous insight into myself.

I was blown away by how helpful I found the program. Going in, I thought I had a pretty good sense of how I would transition to retirement, but quickly realized how many things are about to change and how those changes would impact every area of life. Elizabeth and David are engaging, entertaining and insightful. Their holistic process touches on everything from what an ideal day would look like, to physical health and wellness, relationships, roles, personal fulfillment, peace of mind, financial freedom and sense of balance. I highly recommend including your spouse. I left after two days with a much greater sense of clarity, purpose and direction, as well as a practical, detailed plan on how to make the most of this exciting next phase.
